Making my own market stalls

The main reason I started Northwing Miniatures was to make it possible for me to put on games set during one of the revolts. While some of these will be set in the countryside of ancient Judaea, naturally many would take place in cities. While buildings would be essential, I also wanted “street terrain” that models could fight over. Scatter terrain would be critical, but so would other items of street furniture such as market stalls. The histories and Biblical accounts suggest that fights around markets would be quite likely. For example, when Jesus famously entered the temple and overturned the tables of merchants and money lenders.

Rather than buy commercially available ones I decided it’d be fun to make my own. Inspired by the work of a fellow club member at the Newcastle Clubhouse I therefore set to work.
I made these using hot glue, foamboard (for the bases) balsa wood, coffee stirrers, glasses wipes, PVA glue, sand, and a variety of acrylic paints. I sprayed them black and then dry brushed the various wood and canvas parts, before glueing down the sand and staining it.

Overall, I am very happy with how these turned out. When I make more of these in the future the only thing I would change is that instead of using foamboard for the bases, I would use MDF. The reason for this is that I suspect the foamboard will not last very long in use, and MDF will make them a bit sturdier.
